In writing, we are asking the students to "bump up" their work. In other words, make it better. For example, try to take a level 2 piece of work and make it a level 3! Here are the suggestions on how to bump up your work in the 6 areas of writing that we study:
IDEAS: make an interesting topic sentence
- add detail sentence(s)
- make sure the details are on topic
- ORGANIZATION:
- have a beginning, middle and end
- be sure the order makes sense
- VOICE:
- choose words that create a particular tone
- show strong emotion
- WORD CHOICE:
- use lots of describing words
- use strong action words
- SENTENCE FLUENCY:
- write complete sentences
vary and expand sentences
- write a good concluding sentence for each paragraph
- CONVENTIONS:
- begin each sentence with a capital letter
- end each sentence with the correct punctuation
- use commas correctly
- use correct grammar
- indent paragraphs
