Moderns Department

Welcome to the Moderns Department at Stamford High School.~ The moderns department includes Core French, and Spanish. Courses offered are Grade 9 Applied and Academic French, Grade 10 Academic French, Grade 11 University Preparation, Grade 12 University Preparation, and Grade 10 Introductory Spanish.  Students are required to take French in Grade 9 at the Applied or Academic level in as part as a which mandatory credit for High School Graduation. The Moderns Department is dedicated to the growth and well being of our students. Many activities are planned to encourage the development of languages as well as the understanding of various cultures in Canada and in the world. Along with regular classes, there are overnight trips, day trips, competitions and camps. The aim of the Moderns Department is to help students’ function in our global community, in the workplace, and in traveling and social situations.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Grade 9 Applied (FSF 1P1)
This course emphasizes the concurrent development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills, using a broad-based theme such as the media. Students will enhance their ability to understand and speak French through conversations, discussions, and presentations. They will also read short stories, articles, poems, and songs, and write brief descriptions, letters, dialogues, and invitations.
Grade 9 Academic (FSF 1D1)
This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as relationships, social trends, and careers. Thematic readings, which include a selection of short stories, articles, and poems, will serve as stepping-stones to oral and written activities.
Core French-Academic (FSF 2D1)
This course enables students to increase their knowledge of the French language, further develop their language skills, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world. Exploring a variety of themes, students will develop and apply critical thinking skills in discussion, in their analysis and interpretation of texts, and in their own writing.
Core French-University Preparation (FSF 3U1)
This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and writing skills and to reinforce oral communication skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of French-speaking cultures in Canada and around the world through their reading of a variety of materials, including a short novel or a play. Students will produce various written assignments, including a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.
Core French-University Preparation (FSF 4U1)
This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of French- language skills. Students will consolidate their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues. They will read a variety of texts and will write a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.
Introductory Spanish (LWS BD)
This course introduces students to the achievements of the world through the study of Spanish. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar essential for reading and translating texts. English is the language of instruction. Through a variety of enrichment activities, such as presentations, debates, and dialogues, students will explore such aspects of life in the world as trade, commerce, education, entertainment, and social customs while improving their language skills.
FIELD TRIPS & COMPETITIONS

Concours d'Art Oratoire
Public Speaking Contest - Students from grade 10, 11, 12 Core French are invited to enter the public speaking contest that is run by the District School Board of Niagara. Winners of the competition proceed to the Provincial Contest. This is an excellent activity to improve speaking skills and gain confidence with the language.

Brock-Niagara French Contest
An annual contest, held at Brock University that is designed for Grade 12 students in Core French. There are a variety of activities that the students partake in. There are three categories to place students: Anglophone, Francophone and Special. Prizes are distributed to winners in all categories at a ceremony at Brock University. This contest also serves as the District School Board of Niagara's French Scholarship Exam.

Grade 10 Camp
This day of fun-filled activities "tout en français" is designed for students in Grade 10 Core French. The camp takes place in May at Camp Wetaskawin, in St. Catharines.

Spanish Trip
Any student in Grade 10 Spanish is invited to the yearly trip to Toronto to the Plaza Flamenco restaurant. Students are first given a  hour dance lesson (the salsa) and then they enjoy a buffet lunch. After lunch, there is a flamenco presentation by professional dancers.

Student Exchanges
Students have the opportunity to discover and explore places and cultures, improve or develop new language skills, and make lifelong friendships through reciprocal exchanges and, or through taking a trip to France.
