Alternative Programs offered in the District School Board of Niagara

ACE Program - SHSM in Energy

The ACE Program will train students to be “Ambassadors for Conservation of Energy”. This Specialist High Skills Major program in Energy will run at both Westlane Secondary School in Niagara Falls, and E.L. Crossley Secondary School in Fonthill. Students will learn about electricity and energy primarily through Technological Studies and Science courses in Grades 11 and 12. As well, they will be expected to complete at least one two-credit Cooperative Education placement in a related workplace. Our many partners in the electrical and energy sector of the Niagara economy will be their hosts for these co-operative education placements. In addition, students will undergo training and certification recognized by the energy sector, such as Energy Star and LEED training and will learn more about careers and education in the burgeoning renewable energy field through our partnership with the Bachelor or Technology at Mohawk college and McMaster University.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program ( OYAP)

Students who participate in this program obtain both apprenticeship hours and high school credits at the same time. The program allows secondary school students to get a head start on earning hours towards their apprenticeship.

Students who are interested in participating in apprenticeship education should explore technological education courses offered throughout the DSBN. To participate in OYAP, the student will need to take Cooperative Education in their senior years.  If the employer and student agree, the Training Consultant from the Ministry of Education and Training may sign the student to an apprenticeship at any time during the Co-op placement.

Students who are at least 16 years of age and have completed the credit requirements for Grade 10 or equivalent will qualify for the program.
