Welcome Back Students!     28112008_91143_0.png
Let me take this opportunity to welcome you back from summer vacation.  I hope that you had an extraordinary break and a lot of fun.  It definitely went by too quickly.  We’ll be going into this school year with a bang!

As you know, Mrs. Furry is on maternity leave and I will be your teacher until the end of March, 2009.  You’ve seen me around Fort Erie Elementary for the last three years as I’ve been in Mrs. Pye’s class and the Special Education class last year.

Some of the highlights to look forward to will be: sports, tribes, Talent Show, Christmas Assembly, speeches, fundraisers, more clubs and the end of year trip.

I suggest that each student start out with a few items such as:  pencil crayons, pencils, pens, a binder that can be divided for possibly six different subjects and a lock for your locker.  Please don’t tell your friends your combination as this will ensure that your belongings are kept safe and sound.  If you have any extra magazines/newspapers that your family would like to get rid of, I would appreciate them in our classroom.  They often come in handy for projects.

I have decided that we will have a classroom contract that each student and parent/guardian will sign at the beginning of this year to help us focus on learning in the classroom instead of having to deal with some little discipline issues.  This way each student is well aware of what is expected and will have a very enjoyable transition.

Top 10 Contract/Classroom Rules:
1)      All homework will be completed when it is due. (Math work to be done in pencil only).  Each morning Bell work will be completed and handed in to be marked.  Part of your grade will include these marks. Homework completion will also be added into each student’s grade.  If a student is consistently absent a grade may not be able to be given.

2)      Five checks (CHAMPS) per week will be instituted, for any reason a student receives 6 check marks he/she will be assigned additional work/project that will be decided by his/her tribe or myself.  Incentive may/not be included, depending on issue.

3)      If for any reason a student does not understand any assignment or lesson he/she will be responsible for asking for additional help from myself or teacher.

4)      Daily communication (agenda) will be encouraged between parent/guardian and myself and teacher but it will the students responsibility to write down any/all assignments, test, projects or any additional information require so your parent/guardian may be informed.

5)      There will be NO cell phones, MP3 players, PSP, GameBoy or any electronic equipment brought into the classroom.  If a parent/guardian requires you to have a cell phone for emergency reason it MUST remain in your locker at all times, only to be checked when going to or coming in from fitness break.  Please refer to DSBN policy.

6)      Only two person(s) at a time leaving the classroom for washroom break, lunch break /snack break or any reason other than an emergency.  During Nutrition break a student is to ask the Teacher on Duty for permission to leave the classroom.  The student will sign out on the “white board” but please do not erase your name.

7)      The “Tuck Shop” is to be visited by the Grade 8 during the second nutrition break only.  Please make sure that you have a snack for the first break, if for any reason you do not have a snack/lunch, please let the Teacher on Duty know as the Breakfast Club room always has something good and nutritious to offer.  Tuck Shop is not to be used for not having a lunch.

8)      Students will remain at their own assigned seats when eating their lunch and may only throw garbage out when the bell rings or the Teacher on Duty has allowed the student to do otherwise.

9)      There will be no loud/yelling talk during lunch/indoor recess when students are to be inside; quiet talk is of course encouraged.
10)     All other rules or regulations may be covered in the student agenda.

See Long Range Plans for an idea of what is going to be covered this year.  Exact time might differ depending on student learning.  Enclosed is a tentative timetable of your classes, depending on class numbers and teacher timetabling conflicts this may change.

My goal for this year is to have a lot of fun and interesting lessons for all.  Each student will be asked to fill out an “Interest” survey to help me choosing the type of lessons we will have.  I am positive that our Grade 8, 2008-2009 class will be one to remember with a lot of good memories!

Here’s to a fantastic year everyone!
