French Immersion Program
The expectations for French as a second language in Extended French and French Immersion programs are organized into three strands that correspond to the three main areas of language use: oral communication; reading; and writing. The programs in all grades are designed to develop a range of essential skills in reading, writing, and oral language, providing students with a solid foundation in spelling and grammar; the ability to comprehend what they read in a range of different kinds of texts; an appreciation of literature and the ability to interpret and respond to it; and the ability to use oral language accurately and effectively.
Students in extended and immersion programs will have many opportunities, in their study of other subjects taught in French, to apply the knowledge and practise and refine the skills they acquire through achievement of the FSL expectations in all three strands.
The AIM Program
Histoires en Action! has proven to be a revolutionary new approach to second language instruction. This content based program is centered upon the use of stories and music as context for language acquisition. Students learn vocabulary through the Gesture Approach (GA). The GA accelerates the internalization of the target vocabulary from unit to unit and year to year, as students experience and respond to vocabulary and structures kinesthetically, visually, physically, and auditorially. The approach ensures an equal, strong emphasis on the development of all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) through a program that meets the needs of all language learners and their learning styles. The use of stories and songs in second-language instruction allows students to draw upon
years of prior experience with their own language and literacy development in their first language. This program was designed to ensure that children truly experience language. It is an active, interactive, in-process approach in which children truly live the language and experience the language until it becomes part of their being.
